CHAPTER - THREE
SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND FORMATION
One of the ingredients of good writing is the variation of sentence structure and the
application of punctuation marks in a way to accurately communicate the message of the
writer. This section is devoted to the structure of the sentences in English and their
formation.
Learning and study objectives
This lesson will help us to;
• Understand the meaning and composition of a sentence
• The forms and types of sentences
• Write sentences clearly in a paragraph.
We are starting with the basic structure of a sentence. But, before we check the structure of
a sentence, we need to know the meaning of a sentence.
What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that express a complete thought. It typically contains a subject
and a predicate and takes a statement, question, command, or exclamation. Sentences are
fundamental to communication as they allow us to convey ideas clearly and effectively.
Sentence = subject +verb + object
• The subject is the performer of action in the sentence or the headword or the theme of
the sentence. The subject is a noun or pronoun.
• The object is the receiver of action in the sentence.
Examples: Kofi runs the race.
Kofi =subject
Runs = verb
The race = object
