In essay writing, you must make it a point of writing complete sentences to develop your

points. You have to use linking verbs or words as connectors to link sentences to form a

paragraph. Let us look at the basic forms of a sentence.

                                Basic forms of Sentences

1. Declarative Sentence: Makes a statement and ends with a full stop.

     • Example: The sun sets in the west.

2. Interrogative Sentence: Asks a question and ends with a question mark.

     • Example: What time does the meeting start?

3. Imperative Sentence:         Gives a command or request and ends with a period or

exclamation mark.

     • Example: Please close the door.

4. Exclamatory Sentence: Expresses strong emotion and ends with an exclamation mark.

     • Example: What a beautiful day!

     For us to understand the basic forms of sentences, let us check the passage below.

Passage Using Different Types of Sentences

On a bright summer morning, Sarah decided to visit the park. She thought it would be a

perfect day to relax and read her favourite book. As she walked down the path, she noticed

the vibrant flowers in full bloom. "What a stunning view!" she exclaimed. She found a cozy

spot under a large oak tree and settled down with her book.

"Do you come here often?" a voice interrupted her thoughts. Sarah looked up to see a friendly

face smiling at her. "Yes, I do," she replied, "It's my favourite place to unwind." The stranger

introduced himself as John. They chatted for a while about their favorite books and hobbies.

Suddenly, John said, "Let's take a walk around the park!" Sarah agreed, happy to have made

a new friend.
