Local communities are also stepping up to fight against galamsey. In some regions, chiefs

and residents have formed committees to monitor and report illegal mining activities. 'We

must protect our land for our children. Galamsey is not the answer,' says Nana Kwame

Amponsah, a chief in the Ashanti Region.

However, experts believe that enforcement alone is not enough. Sustainable alternatives

must be provided to those who depend on illegal mining for survival. Programs focused on

reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and legal small-scale mining are being proposed as

long-term solutions to this complex issue."
