PARAGRAPH TRANSITIONS

Transitional words or phrases order, time, cause or other relation of the idea in a paragraph.

These show the reader, the course of the event in the paragraphs or essays are changing.

They can be useful at the beginning, at the middle and the end of a paragraph to shift in

direction and achieve coherency. They are chains joining the various paragraphs to form one

essay.

Some basic transitions

   1. For raising the first point.

         First of all, firstly, in the first place, to begin with, etc.

   2. For additional points.

         Also, in addition, besides, moreover, equally important, furthermore, not only that

         but, etc.

   3. For the last point.

         Finally, lastly, last, etc.

   4. Conclusion.

         To crown it all, to conclude, in conclusion, in the nutshell, etc.

   5. For comparison.

         In the same way, likewise, similarly, etc.

   6. Concession.

         Granted, naturally, of course, etc.

   7. For contrast/differences.

         Although, at the same time, however, in contrast, in spite of, instead, nevertheless,

         notwithstanding, on the contrary, on the other hand, otherwise

   8. Emphasis.

         Certainly, indeed, in fact, of course, etc.
