Types of Sentences Based on Structure

1. Simple Sentences: A simple sentence consists of a single independent clause(main). It has

a subject and a predicate and expresses a complete thought.

 • Examples

   a) The cat sleeps.

   b) She reads every day.

   c) They went to the park.

Let us check the next type of sentence structure.

2. Compound Sentences: A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses

joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), a semicolon, or a colon.

 Examples:

         a) She wanted to go for a walk, but it started to rain.

         b) The sun set, and the stars appeared.

         c) I finished my homework; now I can watch TV.

We are going to look at the last type of sentence e structure.

 4. Complex Sentences: A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and at least

    one dependent (subordinate) clause. The dependent clause is connected to the

    independent clause using subordinating conjunctions (because, since, after, although,

    when, etc.).

 Examples:

   a) Although it was raining, they went for a hike.

   b) She reads a book whenever she has free time.

   c) Because he studied hard, he passed the exam.

   Now that we know the types of sentence structure, let us use them in a passage
