Passage 6:

Road accidents in Ghana have become a major public concern, leading to countless deaths

and injuries each year. One of the primary causes of these accidents is reckless driving, with

many drivers disregarding traffic regulations such as speed limits and overtaking

restrictions. Additionally, poorly maintained roads and vehicles contribute significantly to

the rising number of accidents. Commercial drivers, often in a rush to maximize profits, are

particularly notorious for speeding and neglecting road safety measures.

The consequences of road accidents in Ghana extend beyond the immediate loss of life. Many

survivors are left with permanent disabilities, placing a heavy burden on families and the

healthcare system. The frequent road accidents also have economic impacts, as productive

members of society are often lost or incapacitated, and vehicles and infrastructure are

damaged, requiring costly repairs.

To combat the high rate of road accidents, the government has intensified road safety

campaigns and enforcement of traffic regulations. The Motor Traffic and Transport

Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has increased road patrols to ensure

compliance with speed limits and other traffic laws. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts

to improve road infrastructure and ensure that vehicles on the roads are properly

maintained.
