1. Listen to the following words and identify the fricative sound in each word. Write down

the sound you hear.

 Word List: - Fish- Van - Think - This- Ship- Measure

For each word, identify whether the fricative is voiced or voiceless.

2. Sort the following words into two categories: voiced fricatives and voiceless fricatives.

 Word List: - Fan - Vase - Live - Half - Zip - Safe

Write the words under the correct category.

3. Practice pronouncing the following minimal pairs, paying attention to the difference

between voiced and voiceless fricatives.

 Word Pairs: - Fan / Van - Thigh / Thy - Sip / Zip - Safe / Save

Say each pair out loud and notice the difference in vocal cord vibration.

4. Practice reading the following sentences, focusing on the smooth blending of fricative

sounds with adjacent sounds.

  1. She found a shiny shell.

  2. The vase is very valuable.

  3. They think it’s a tough path.

  4. His voice is soft but strong.
