navigate online spaces safely and effectively is becoming increasingly important. By allowing

students to use social media, we give them the opportunity to develop digital literacy skills

such as understanding online etiquette, recognising credible sources, and protecting their

privacy. These are essential skills that students will need in their future careers and personal

lives. Rather than banning social media, we should focus on teaching students how to use it

responsibly.

Moreover, Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, social media can be a platform for students

to express themselves creatively and build a positive digital footprint. Whether it’s through

writing blogs, creating videos, or sharing their artwork, social media allows students to

showcase their talents and interests to a wider audience. It can also be a platform for them

to engage in social causes and advocate for issues they care about. This can help students

build confidence, develop their personal brand, and even open doors to future opportunities.

Banning social media would stifle this creative expression and limit students’ ability to build

a positive online presence.

In conclusion, Mr. Chairman, Panel of Judges, Invited Guests, Timekeepers, Co-debaters,
Fellow Students, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is evident that students should be allowed to use
social media. While there are risks associated with social media, these can be mitigated
through education and responsible use. The benefits of communication, enhanced learning,
digital literacy, and creative expression far outweigh the potential drawbacks. Therefore, I
strongly urge you to reject the motion that students should not be allowed to use social
media.
