The next is to state some of the points of your opponent and refute them.

Stating the points of the opponent and refuting them

Here state two of your opponent’s points and refute them. Below is an example.

Example

My fellow student said teachers contribute to the economy in that teachers help to train

labourers for the country. Again, he argued that teachers offer revenue to the government by

paying direct taxes. What a falsehood! (Fallacy or misguided judgment). However, Mr.

Chairman, teachers do not train labourers for the country but rather teach only theoretical

aspects. Also, teachers’ contributions to the tax revenue to the economy are insignificant.

Bringing the points and showing readiness

State that some of the ‘points of the topic are’, then bring out your points. Let us look at

examples.

Examples

   •   These causes of teenage pregnancy are inadequate parental care, poverty, and peer

       influence.

   •   These are the effects of road accidents in the country: loss of lives, loss of government

       revenue, and poverty among families.
