to engage in work to aid their family. These parents go along the way by pushing their girl

child into prostitution and early marriage to support the family. The effect is that these girls

would get pregnant in their teens, leading to school dropout and its social effects. For

instance, according to the GES annual report, last year about 10,000 JHS girls dropped out

of school due to teenage pregnancy. If the rate of teenage pregnancy in the country does not

reduce by drastic measures such as school feeding programs, I am afraid our population

would be more than double every year. I suggest that the government must do all it can to

help reduce poverty levels in the country and reduce teenage pregnancy.

Finally, I think peer influence causes teenage pregnancy. Young people are influenced by

their peers. These teenagers listen to the advice of their peers to engage in acts that can lead

them into danger. Most of the time, peers are fond of items such as phones and computers

that their friend used. These friends with these items may have engaged in premarital sex

for them. But they would lure their friends to engage in these acts to get their luxury. The

result may be engaging in premarital sex with the teenage girls to get the items leading into

teenage pregnancy. The effect is that the teenage girls would end up being single parents for

the rest of their lives. Young people should be very mindful of the people they associate with.

I hope that parents will keep a close eye on their children to help them choose good friends

for the association.

To crown it, teenage pregnancy as one of the social problems in the country could be

controlled as we pinned out the causes. I hope that the whole country will take bold steps to

tackle teenage pregnancy.
