Example 3: Lack of role models causes drug abuse in Ghana

In many neighborhoods throughout Ghana, children grow up in environments where

positive role models are scarce or entirely absent, leaving them without the guidance they

need to navigate the complexities of adolescence. As they enter their teenage years, they

often find themselves searching for someone to look up to, someone who can provide them

with direction and purpose. In the absence of such figures, they may turn to peers or older

individuals who do not have their best interests at heart, seeking acceptance and a sense of

belonging. These influences often lead them down a dangerous path, where they begin to

experiment with drugs as a way to cope with their challenges or to fit in with a certain crowd.

This lack of positive influence leaves them vulnerable to substance abuse, which can quickly

spiral into addiction, derailing their lives and futures. Ultimately, it is the absence of

strong role models that contributes significantly to the problem of drug abuse

among the youth in Ghana.
