Creating Complex Sentences for cohesion

Complex sentences contain an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.

These sentences add depth to our writing by providing additional information. The following

subordinating conjunctions help in forming complex sentences:

Time Clauses

   1. When: Call me when you arrive.

   2. Before: Before you leave, turn off the lights.

   3. After: We went home after the movie ended.

   4. Since: Since it started raining, we stayed indoors.

   5. While: She read a book while waiting for the bus.

   6. As: As he was speaking, the crowd grew silent.

   7. Until: Wait here until I come back.

Conditional Clauses

   1. If: If it rains, we will cancel the picnic.

   2. Unless: You won't succeed unless you work hard.

       Purpose Clauses

   1. In order to: He studied hard in order to pass the exam.

   2. So that: She saved money so that she could buy a car.

Reason Clauses

   1. Because: He left early because he was tired.

   2. Since: Since it was late, we decided to go home.

   3. As: As she was hungry, she ate an apple.
