Passage 7:

In Ghana, several diseases such as malaria, cholera, and typhoid are prevalent, especially in

communities with poor sanitation. Lack of access to clean water and proper waste disposal

creates ideal conditions for these diseases to spread. For instance, stagnant water serves as

breeding grounds for mosquitoes, leading to the high incidence of malaria, while

contaminated water sources contribute to cholera and typhoid outbreaks.

These diseases place a heavy burden on both individuals and the healthcare system. Many

people, particularly children and the elderly, suffer severe complications, and the cost of

treatment further strains families financially. The frequent outbreaks also stretch

healthcare resources, making it difficult to manage other health concerns.

In response to these challenges, the government and health organizations have launched

various public health campaigns. These include promoting hygiene practices, distributing

treated mosquito nets, and improving water and sanitation infrastructure to prevent the

spread of diseases. Vaccination programs for diseases like typhoid are also being expanded

to reduce infection rates.
