A SPEECH DELIVERED BY MR. KOLO ON THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTURE

DURING ANNUAL CULTURAL DAY IN DAS EXPERIMENTAL SCHOOL

Mr. Chairman, Distinguished guests, esteemed teachers, fellow students, ladies and

gentlemen. Good morning. It is a great honour to stand before you on this special occasion

of our school’s Culture Day celebration. Today, we gather to celebrate the rich and diverse

cultural heritage that defines us as a nation. Culture is not just the expression of our history

and traditions; it is the very soul of our identity as Ghanaians. As we reflect on the

importance of culture to our country, I would like to highlight four key points, each with its

significant results and effects.

Firstly, culture preserves our history and heritage. The traditions, customs, and practices

passed down from generation to generation keep our history alive. Through festivals, rituals,

and storytelling, we maintain a connection to our ancestors and the values they upheld. This

preservation of history fosters a sense of pride and belonging among citizens. When people

feel connected to their past, they develop a strong sense of identity, which in turn strengthens

national unity. As a result, cultural preservation helps to maintain the social fabric of the

nation, ensuring that we do not lose sight of who we are and where we come from.

Again, culture promotes national unity and social cohesion. Ghana is a country rich in ethnic

diversity, with over 70 ethnic groups, each with its own unique customs and languages.

Despite this diversity, our shared cultural practices, such as traditional dances, music, and

festivals, bring us together as one people. These cultural expressions create a sense of

common identity and mutual respect among different communities. The effect of this unity

is a more peaceful and harmonious society, where people from different backgrounds can

live and work together in harmony. In a world often divided by differences, culture serves as

a powerful unifying force that binds us together as one nation.
