                      ADVANCED PARAGRAPH STRUCTURES

We've discussed the basics of paragraph writing, including topic sentences, supporting

details, and cohesive devices. Now, it's time to delve into more advanced structures that can

enhance the clarity, coherence, and impact of your writing. This chapter will cover the use of

topic and concluding sentences, the PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) structure,

and how to incorporate various paragraph types within an essay.

The Role of Topic Sentences

A topic sentence introduces the main idea of a paragraph, setting the stage for the supporting

sentences that follow. In advanced writing, topic sentences can do more than just state the

main idea—they can also:

   • Indicate the direction of the paragraph.

   • Make a claim or argument that the rest of the paragraph will support.

   • Transition smoothly from the previous paragraph.

Examples of Effective Topic Sentences

1. Indicating Direction:

 "One of the most significant benefits of renewable energy is its potential to reduce

greenhouse gas emissions."

2. Making a Claim:

 "Despite its many benefits, social media can negatively impact mental health by increasing

feelings of loneliness and anxiety."
