Producing Pure Vowel Sounds (Short Vowels, long and centering) in Context

Short vowels are vowel sounds that are typically shorter in duration and are produced

without a noticeable change in the position of the tongue or lips. These sounds are common

in English and are often found in words with a single vowel followed by one or more

consonants.

Short Vowel Sounds and Examples:

1. /æ/ - as in cat, hat, bat

  Example: The cat sat on the mat.

2. /ɛ/ - as in bed, men, pen

  Example: The men left the tent early.

3. /ɪ/ - as in sit, hit, fish

  Example: He will sit in the big chair.

4. /ɒ/ - as in dog, hot, not

  Example: The dog is not in the house.

5. /ʌ/ - as in cup, run, sun

  Example: She drank a cup of hot tea.
